If you take care of your mattress, it will take care of you! Proper care needs to be given in order for it to function properly. A mattress is an investment, and you’ll want to keep it for as long as possible. Follow these tips to make sure your mattress is here to stay!

The very first step of taking care of your mattress is ensuring it is installed properly. Incorrect installation of the frame and box spring will decrease the life of the mattress, and even effect how it feels. The foundation and mattress are designed to work together to mamimize support. Using an old box spring with a new mattress will not provide the desired product performance. The frame should be of good quality to prevent the mattress from sinking in the middle.

Edge support is very important when it comes to mattress structure. Repeated pressure wears away at the edges, so make sure not to repeatedly sit on the same part of the edge. You should turn your mattress 4 times a year to distribute wear evenly. It should not only be turned side to side, but top to bottom as well. Rotating your mattress allows the padding materials to settle evenly and reduce body impressions.

Keep your mattress clean and dry. A mattress protector can prevent stains, spills and moisture from ruining the mattress. A good one will be both waterproof and breathable. By keeping your mattress dry, you preserve the top comfort layers that help retain the mattress’s shape longer. Make sure you treat any spills as soon as possible, but don’t saturate the fabric with water or cleaning liquid. You should vacuum your mattress to remove dust particles. To keep it smelling fresh, sprinkle baking soda on top of the mattress, wait 20 minutes, then vacuum. You should do this once every 3 months.

Let your mattress breathe. Mattresses can collect moisture, so strip off all the sheets to air your mattress out when possible. A good time to do this would be when you go on vacation.

Contrary to popular belief, removing your mattress tag is NOT illegal! However, it’s a good idea to keep it on to avoid voiding your warranty. The tag serves as a form of identification if you were to need to file a warranty claim.

And now we come to our last tip- don’t jump on the bed! Undeniably good advice, but no fun either! Jumping on the bed ruins coins in the innerspring and fibers in a foam mattress, so keep the jumping outdoors!
